Project McMosin (UK59 build)

Postby Gamecock24 » Fri Aug 23, 2013 6:00 am

Well I've been kind of lurking on this site for a month or so now getting ideas and info. Now that I kind of have an idea of the direction I want to go in with my build I decided to start a thread. I just figureded I'd call it the McMosin. This is a little photoshop fun.

Here's what I've got so far:
Chinese Type 53 for the base to build off
Image
UK59 barrel
Image
RSI scope mount
Timney trigger
Harris bipod
JP tactical muzzle brake
Image

To be acquired:
Big Gorilla Viper stock pending my decision of color
Scope
Max Shepard low profile bolt
Cerakote color to be determined pending stock color/finish

The only work done so far is some lite rust removal to the receiver. Nothing bad just had a few small spots of surface rust which easily came off. I sanded them off with some 300 grit sand paper I had and put some perma blue on the spots for a temporary fix until I Cerakote everything.
The other thing I've done is bob my cocking knob. It's not perfect but it's what I could with the tools on hand.

Well it's not much of a start but its something and we all have to start somewhere. In the next few weeks I'll be having the barrel profiled and getting the barrel mated to the receiver with the help of another forum member.

Would you detail the machining of the barrel. I have one but I am not sure I am going to use it or sell it. With all the required machine work, I think I may just sell it and get a McGowen.

thanks

I'm not actually doing the machine work myself. But there is a thread on here that does detail it pretty well. I'll find it and post the link. I did consider the McGowen barrels too but after reading Shepard's MS 308 thread it sounds like there is still some machine work that has to be done to those barrels too. It may not be as much work but I already had the UK barrel so I decided to go with it for now. It just seems cooler to me to have Mosin and UK59 together. If I decide to do another rifle in the future I'll will get one their barrels.

Here's the link
viewtopic.php?t=2209

0993 lists all the details and specs you should need to do the rifle.

Good luck in your build and keep us posted. :)

McGowan is a great company if you can wait for what you ordered. And I mean wait. One thing I can say about my McGowan barrel build is that accuracy out of a 26 inch barrel is - sub moa. Dark Warrior is my most accurate rifle. I'm saving for another SWFA SS 20x42 scope. For the money they work great.

Micky here's how I was thinking the barrel profile would. I found a rough sketch in a UK59 build thread that I threw into AutoCAD to clean it up.

Thanks for the Auto CAD. I can give it to my machinist and we can see where it goes from there.

Looking at the sleeve, is that designed to take as little off the barrel as possible or is the sleeve designed to match the receiver diameter?

The sleeve design looks like its to keep the barrel as fat as possible and minimize the machining on the barrel. Which is what I want. I'm not sure of the OD on the round receiver. Maybe someone else can answer that question.
If found the info on the surplus rifle forum UK59 build thread. There's some pics of the sleeve meeting the barrel.

Here's what me and Jerry have come up with for my barrel. This is more simplified.

Looking good!!

The O.D. of a round receivers vary but they typically run around 1.260"-1.265"... just big enough that a 1.250" Dia. bushing is slightly smaller.

I like that profile... and with the bulk of the barrel being slightly under 1" (.920") will save quite a bit of work inletting (or opening up) the barrel channel. If you do go with a Big Gorilla Gun Works stock, Mike can run you a straight 1" barrel channel.

Looking forward to this project! 8-)
