Thread size for action screws?

Postby Marauder 1 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 9:36 pm

anyone have the proper treads per inch and diameter for the action screws? Looks like I need to treat the threads in the magazine. They seem to possibly be stretched a little. My new rock solid screws don't feel like they are going in correctly. I think if I could run a tap down the treads that would fix the issue.
Thanks
Mark

Ask Rock Solid guys, they knows for sure... I don't think it is standard... I tried to find appropriated tap unit for it when I did my first UM... I couldn't find it anywhere...

Take them with you to the hardware store, they usually have a pitch guage. You will need the threads per inch as well as the diameter.

OK did some digging and found the following
Rear action screw
Threads Per Inch 32
Outside Diameter 0.256"

Seems most of the screws in the Mosin Nagant use 32 tpi there are a few others use 40 tpi

Now we need a .256x32 tap!

Mosins were made with British or Witworth thread pattern. 55 degree threads not 60 degree like American. I have been hunting all of my machine supply companies and have not yet found a
1/4 x 32 Witworth tap. If any of you know of any west coast machine supply companies that have them, post the name. I need a few. I believe Ken at RSI cuts the action screw threads on a machine. I haven't called him yet, but the type of business he has I don't think he's die cutting the threads.

Remember that the ugh metric system came along about 50 years after the production of Mosins started. Why mess up a good gun with Japanese threads.

I think I MAY have a source for the tap, I'm going to send them a spare set of action screws to verify the thread count and angle. The so far the cost looks like it's going to be about 20 bucks a tap if we can order 12. I'll need a couple so if anyone else is interested let me know. I think we can get a better price on the more we order. IF this works out I might try to keep a few for sale here.

Put me in for 3. I have a company that will make any type tap or die, just thought being Witworth fine thread they would have them in stock but no. If your going to send them a screw for a pattern, you might want to send a new RSI screw as the measurement of a used one may be off.
