MN 91/30 (soon to be Blonde Russian)

Postby Bob the nailer » Thu Jul 09, 2015 9:49 am

Finally picked up a Mosin to build on. Russian 91/30 looks to be super nice shape. I will strip it down to a barreled action and sell the stock, sights, oiler, ammo pouches since I do't have a need for them. Not much of a military config. collector as I like to sporterize and sometimes wildcat chamber them.

I have been working with Bluegrass gun works and have the reworked bolt body with tactical threaded handle, Rock solid mount, trigger shoe and waiting on the Tactical knob. The Maple SF Tactical stock is ordered along with a just delivered Timney trigger. All the small parts are soaking in solvent to loosen up the storage grease. I'll do some work to the bolt to smooth up the contact areas and polish up any surface that needs a slick feel, then on to slug the bore for a diameter check.

It looks like a nice start. Your rifle appears to be in very nice condition. How does the bore look visually?

I've been working on this 91/30 between jobs and also have received all the small parts needed for the build. Bluegrass has been an excellent supplier to work with and now the wait for the SF Tactical maple stock. All parts are clean, bolt welding work done (Bluegrass mod.) and first inspections of the bore show a bright mirror like shine to the bore :) . I'll look around the shop for some soft lead to slug the bore with otherwise I can heat up some cerrosafe for a mold.

Nice rifle, love those laminates. I have several and each one is unique. Can't wait to see the finished project.

Thanks
Mark

Finally spent some time on the Mosin on the bench. All the bolt work is finished, polished and lubed, works very smooth. I drilled and tapped the Rock solid mount and still need to set the rear screw once I decide on optics. The bore slugged at .312 so I am thinking .311 bullets will work best, I'll see how it shoots before I go into the effort of sleveing the barrel.

I have a tikka that slugs .312 and .311 bullets shot like crap! But there is salvation, Hornady makes a .312 bthp and a .312 rn... this is the route you need to go... I'm using the .312 RN since I made mine into a scout rifle and my groups went from 5" to moa without any load work...trust me go this route with one of those bullets!

That is what I have been reading on other forums too. Are you loading the 174 grain pills? sure wish it slugged at .308 as I am sitting on a boat load of 168 hpbt bullets.

Yes I am loading the 174gr rn as this will be a shorter range shooting rifle... if I were to shoot beyond 300 I would use the .312 bthp

Watching some SOCAMO videos there is one with loads using Varget and 174 grain pills and he is printing some tight groups with a military barrel!
