Heavy Varmint Barrel info leads for .311

Postby Randalloc » Sat Feb 21, 2015 6:51 pm

Gentlemen,
I have been in pursuit of a .311 heavy varmint barrel(shilen heavy varmint contour) and have been stymied left and right it seems and at the moment I cannot get a certain barrel man to reply to my email or phone calls.

I know going to a .308 bullet makes more sense for the amount and availability but I want to work on my transition to hand loading by first doing a nice .311 custom rig.

So I know McGowan offers them but have heard from Shep and others of at least a 10 weeks wait or more. I understand Shilen and Krieger make them again the wait and X-caliber. I have talked to the barrel man but so far cannot get any commitment, so I am wondering if anyone else might have some source that might be possible. I have talked to Shep about doing a thinner bull but I really want to pursue a real heavy varmint until I have exhausted all resources.

Ideas? links ? resources? I am all ears... thanks!
Randall

I'm still waiting on my Mcgowen, I ordered it mid December last year. I wish I had just gotten a Bull from Shep now

You could have been shooting it by now. Barring any mistakes, your about half way there.

Hi all,

I'm also interested in getting a heavy Varmint barrel.

Any update or contact would be very much appreciated.

Regards,

KJ

Would it be be possible to get a Shilen tube in .311 with a varmint contour, and have shep do the chambering and threading on it?

Everybody's best bet is to get a .311"-.310" contoured blank and have someone do the threading, chambering, and possibly even install.

Most barrel companies are going to charge for 'custom' work, plus the wait time. You're not going to find many barrel makers that have anything but common caliber reamers, so they would have to rent/buy one for the 7.62x54R... But they are barrel makers, and they turn out pretty good blanks. For $200-$350 you can pick up a blank in .311" from a number of well known makers.

Shilen http://www.shilen.com/calibersAndTwists.html

Pac-nor http://pac-nor.com/barrels/

Lilja http://www.riflebarrels.com/products/ca ... _rates.htm

Krieger https://kriegerbarrels.com/twist#bolt

Lothar Walther http://www.lothar-walther.com/375.php

Obermeyer http://obermeyerbarrels.com/index.html

Shilen and pac-nor are probably your fastest wait times. I've been quoted 6 weeks for several shilen barrels, but have always received them in less than 3 weeks. Pac-nor has about a 4 week wait time. Krieger and Obermeyer will probably be 10 weeks minimum.

Once you have your barrel, you could probably hit up Shepard for the chambering/threading... or your local smith. Provided he's got a lathe, and builds/re-barrels bolt guns, there is nothing special about a Mosin. I'm not sure what Shep charges, but most smith's will charge $200-$350 for re-barreling a bolt action.

Hands down, this is the fastest/cheapest way to go. Those McGowen barrels take a while, and they have shipped out mistakes. The UK-59 barrels are drying up, and the machine work to them is easily 10x what a normal blank would be... added to what they are going for on e-bay, you're easily looking at $1,000 for one of those.

Good luck guys!
