which rifle to temp mod

Postby mosinmike85 » Sat Sep 13, 2014 12:46 am

I want to make a hunting rifle out of one of my mosins. I can't decide which one .I have a 1934 hex tula 91/30 all matching numbers very good condition not counter bored the the other one is a 1945 M38 Izzy all numbers matching but forced match on the mag floor plate it is counter bored it is in a actual M38 stock. I want to use an ATI stock and a rear scope mount with a ler scope due to my aging eyes. Here in western Washington is thick under brush and shots 100 yards or less. Any ideas?

Well since your not cutting the barrels or doing any permanent mods here are a couple things to consider. The M38 typically creates a large muzzle flash. They are not made the same dimensionally as a standard 9130, a lot of after market scope mounts don't work with the M38.

Brass Stacker makes a see thru mount that will work for you and doesn't require the rifle to be irreversibly modded to use. I think the M38 might be more up to the purpose at hand for you.

All that being said IF you do plan to permanently mod the rifle the M9130 has more options for you.

Mark doesn't that Brass stacker mount need two pins in the rear sight? I think the M38 only has one.

Reversible Scope mounts; also consider Advanced Rifle Parts they have one for a 91/30 and one for M39 both very stable for traditional scope location. they require lock into the rear sight and wrap around the barrel so you have 3 points of contact. I have both and so far they have treated me right. They dont harm the rifle and you can reverse them back to original condition.

Brass stacker makes a mount just for the M38..

Since it is a temporary job, I would use the m38 as it will have the shorter barrel and would be easier to maneuver while in the brush.

Then when you decide that you like it so much that you don't want to change it back, you can mail me your m38 stock for my m38 in an m44 stock. :P
