BOLT HANDLE RELOCATION

Postby Shepard » Fri Aug 17, 2012 7:06 pm

In the past we have talked about relocating the bolt handle to the rear of the bolt. I waited for Mr D to do something cause he was making bolt handles but to no avail. So I'm doing this my self and here are two pictures of the receiver work. I'm going to try a barrel block idea because of the metal I removed on the receiver. Now that the action is finished, I'm taking it to the bluer this week to have it hot blued. Will post pics of the bolt soon.

Actually TC and I were talking about this late last week. I've been wanting to do this for so long! I need to do something with my build before I do something stupid.

I have a question Shep, the Mosin receiver is hardened but from what I've heard that the hardening is not very deep. Do you have to re treat the receiver now?

I've wanted to do that for so long but I never was able to figure out how to actually do the bolt handle. Great job! it looks great.

Thanks
Mark

I spent a little time looking up mosin receiver heat treating and come to the conclusion to your question. No -- all the information about HT come in combination with welding on the receiver -- plugging the holes in an ex-sniper. Removing metal as I did is about the same as drilling holes - I've never heard of any problems from other posters who have done this mod. Heat treating to me being only surface deep only serves to protect from dents and dings, kind of like your skin. Tuff on the outside soft on the inside.
The only problem in a mod like this is you can't do it for someone else without having there gun. It's a completely custom fit.

You were doing so many cool mods I didn't think you'd stop posting your continued works. I figured you would doing what I'm doing now. I like your work but your in Texas and Some of the work I'd like you'd have to have the gun. I just decided to do the mod my self. I miss your postings - you need to get back on the board so we know your alive

I'm on my 2nd blot handle build. The first one the handle didn't fall in to position and wouldn't close right. So number 2 I drilled and pinned the handle to the bolt and silver soldered into position. I used hi-temp - hi-strength silver solder and it was easier to clean up. I have a 10" buffing wheel and plan on polishing it. Here are some more pics of how it looks.
