What would you do?

Postby Marauder 1 » Sat Aug 24, 2013 1:33 pm

OK I'm going to throw this out to the group. I've acquired a early M38 barreled action, the barrel is pristine and not counter bored. It's built on a 1910 HEX receiver, so it's a very early example. So here is my question to you guys, do I build it into a complete M38 and just get a non numbered bolt and floor plate, or should I build it into a mild custom carbine? I actually have an RSI bolt body I could use. I'm kind of torn here. I don't know how many of these are out there. So let's here what you have to say.

Tough call. If it's pristine, it'd be hard NOT to put it back original. Hard, but still doable.

Good luck with what ever you decide.

M38 are rare. I would say go original.

An m38 stock isn't easy to come by. A hex m38 is kinda rare though, especially one that isn't counter bored. Many m38s are in m44 stocks whihch are easier. There are a bunch of blank floor plates and butt plates out there, which you could leave blank or stamp to match. The bolt is another story though. All in all I think I would try to rebuild it as an m38 and look for another rifle to modify.

I guess I should clarify, I would not modify it more than a stock and bolt. Everything else would remain original. Your correct about the M38 stock being hard to come by. I guess I could find an M44 stock. I could find blank floor, butt plates and maybe a blank bolt.

If I go slow and acquire the proper parts I could rebuild it to almost original. The other thing I think I'm going to need is a set of sites

Well anyone else?

I'd go original with that early a receiver.

M38 stocks are not that rare. Here is one though I think its a little over priced..

You could make it a sleeper mod. Bed the action, put in a finn or a huber trigger, mojo or smith sights, upgraded springs, finn magazine. Stuff that isn't really noticeable but should make it shoot better. Maybe refinish a stock really nice & polish up the bolt later?

I would keep it and find a beaten one for a rebarreling project.

Dane I like the way you think.. The stock is going to be the toughest to get at a reasonable price that's for sure, but it's also the last thing I'll need for the build. Finn mag sounds very cool, I'll have to find a couple.. O was thinking of one non stock mod and that would be a sniper bolt. Keep those ideas coming.
