Weird Issue with my M28/30

Postby Marauder 1 » Sat Jul 06, 2013 9:06 pm

OK I've never had a rifle do this so I'm wondering what's up. Here is the symptom. I go to cock the rifle and the bolt handle will actually hang up on the cut out for the stripper clip if your applying any side force to the bolt handle. The bolt slides freely other wise, but if your applying any lateral force it hangs in that pocket.

Any ideas?

It sad to say - but it sounds like there may be some considerable wear on the bolt or the receiver is worn or out of spec. Have you tried a different bolt to see if you have the same problem? Try to determine were the problem lays - bolt or receiver.

Hey Jerry:
Thanks for the reply, here is what I do know at the moment. The receiver doesn't show a lot of wear, it looks pretty darn good in fact. What does seem to be the issue is the bolt, the cam part of the bolt is what is striking the receiver.

If you were to hold the bolt in your hand with the bolt face to the right and the cocking knob pointing left it would be the top left section cam that barely strikes the rear of the stripper stack. It looks like a quick pass over a sanding belt would fix it.

Is the firing pin bent or is the hole in the bolt body too large? Before you remove metal off your vintage parts try to figure what is causing the misalignment and fix that first.

I have not checked the firing pin yet, I'll do that later today. As far as the hole in the bolt body goes I'm going to check that against a known good one for measurements. I do know the firing pin spring was bent but that has since been replaced.

Thanks

I'm holding my 28/30 in my hands here and can't duplicate or envision the problem. Are there any contact marks on the bolt or bolt head? You know that the Finns tried to tighten up the action on the 28/30 with mods to the bolt guide and bolt body. Pictures?
